Jonathan Kaufmann, DO, is a vice president and the chief medical information officer at Bayhealth. He provides leadership for informatics activities, in addition to hospitalists and ICU groups and the department of Care Management. He also leads the Administrator-on-Call program and is a practicing physician in both observation unit and outpatient (Internal Medicine Residency Program practice) Bayhealth settings.

Dr. Kaufmann helps to guide several important initiatives at Bayhealth, including Capacity Management, Digital Health, High Reliability, Lean Operations, Operational Excellence, Patient Safety, and Quality Improvement. Among his achievements, he has helped Bayhealth improve physician satisfaction with the electronic medical record system (EMR), shorten length of stay, reduce Epic EMR email in-basket messages by 25 percent for ambulatory doctors, launch virtual urgent care (which drew than 100 visits per month in the first year), introduce virtual scheduled visits, and complete a strategic plan for virtual health.

Dr. Kaufmann is passionate about working with technology and making it work better for employees, patients, and physicians. Through his efforts, he is committed to improving care in the hospital. Dr. Kaufmann is also passionate about making a positive impact on the community, being a mentor to other physicians, and enabling trusting working relationships with individuals all across the state.

Before coming to Bayhealth in 2015, Dr. Kaufmann was CMIO at The Queen’s Health System in Honolulu, HI. He has been a speaker at Planetree International Conference on Patient-Centered Care (October 2017), HIMSS (March 2018), Epic Users Group Meeting (August 2016, August 2018, August 2021), Becker’s CEO + CFO Roundtable (November 2021), and Delaware Healthcare Forum (October 2022). Currently serving on the board of directors for the Delaware Health Information Network, Dr. Kaufmann chairs the Health Care Claims Database committee.

Board certified in internal medicine and medical informatics, Dr. Kaufmann is a graduate of University of Delaware (BS, biology, and BA, history, honors with distinction). He earned his DO at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

In his spare time, Kaufmann loves all things “nerd,” including comic books, Pokemon cards, and sci-fi and fantasy books/movies. He also enjoys cooking and playing with his kids.
