Bayhealth Appoints Stroke Director

Bayhealth is pleased to announce the appointment of Usman Shehzad, MD, as stroke director for Bayhealth Kent and Sussex Campuses. Dr. Shehzad is a highly trained and board-certified neurologist who will oversee the comprehensive care Bayhealth offers for those who have suffered a stroke.

Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus in Dover and Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus in Milford are both Joint Commission-certified Primary Stroke Centers, offering individualized treatment plans that foster better outcomes after a stroke.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, someone in the U.S. dies of a stroke every 3 minutes, 14 seconds. As a leading cause of adult disability in our nation, timely diagnosis and treatment for stroke is critical.

In his role as stroke director, Dr. Shehzad will lead an experienced team that provides multidisciplinary care for various types of stroke to maximize patients’ recovery and prevent future strokes. He earned his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine. He completed a neurology residency at Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook, New York, followed by a vascular neurology fellowship at University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, New York.

“Dr. Shehzad has been integral to the success and growth of Bayhealth's primary stroke program in his four years here,” said Bayhealth Senior Director of Neurosciences Adam Spengler, MHA.

“He has helped lead the development of Delaware's first mobile stroke unit. He also has helped implement the RAPID-AI program, a global solution that uses artificial intelligence to help detect large vessel blockages in order to reduce the incidence of missed signs of stroke. As stroke director, Dr. Shehzad will work directly with clinical teams to ensure rigorous quality standards are achieved, and will continue his work in expanding stroke service capabilities and outreach within the region.”
