Bayhealth Earns Bariatric Reaccreditation
Bayhealth's Bariatric Surgery Program has again earned national recognition for providing safe, high-quality care. The program was reaccredited as a Comprehensive Center by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). This national program recognizes hospitals that provide excellent care for people having weight loss surgery.
Bariatric surgery is a treatment option for people with obesity who may benefit from significant, medically supervised weight loss. In addition to helping patients lose weight, bariatric surgery can improve or help manage obesity-related health conditions, including type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea.
Bayhealth first earned this accreditation in 2015. The reaccreditation means the program continues to meet national standards for bariatric surgery, including patient safety, surgical care, patient education, staff training, equipment and quality improvement. The MBSAQIP recognizes hospitals that provide excellent care before, during and after surgery.
"This reaccreditation shows Bayhealth's continued commitment to providing safe, high-quality care for our community," said Theodoros Katsichtis, MD, FACS, DABOM, bariatric surgeon and medical director of Bariatric Surgery at Bayhealth. "Our team works together to support patients through every step of their weight loss journey."
The national quality program ensures that patients receive complete, team-based medical care. This specialized care focuses on safe surgical procedures, successful long-term weight loss, and helps to reverse dangerous obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea. To earn this accreditation, programs must meet strict standards for training, patient education, equipment and quality of care. They also regularly review patient results to make sure they continue to provide safe, effective care.
Research shows that patients treated at accredited bariatric centers often have fewer complications and better results. Patients who have had the surgery typically have more energy, move more easily and enjoy a better quality of life.
