Home Again After 33 Days in Hospital
After 33 days in the hospital fighting COVID-19, Maureen Kurek lost much of her muscle strength and energy. When Kurek was well enough to leave Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus, she wanted to go home. But she was nervous. In stepped the BAYADA Home Health Care at Bayhealth team to give Kurek the confidence and guidance needed to safely recover in the comfort of her own home.
“I couldn’t even stand on my own two feet,” said Kurek who was also on oxygen and felt apprehensive about breathing on her own again without assistance. As a once very active and busy 75-year-old, Kurek was determined to feel like herself once more and regain her independence.
The BAYADA Home Health Care at Bayhealth team visited Kurek’s home to do a full assessment. They ensured Kurek could safely recover at home, thoroughly reviewed her medications, and determined a care plan – all within 24 hours of being discharged from the hospital.
For six weeks, Kurek was cared for by Occupational Therapist Mona Suri. The pair worked together to help Kurek perform everyday tasks like showering and climbing into bed. They even walked up and down the driveway to show Kurek she could breathe on her own. Kurek gained more confidence with each session.
“I recovered remarkably well because of Mona’s incredible support and compassion,” Kurek shared. “I found myself pushing to accomplish the goals she set for me and looked forward to her next visit to show her.” With each passing week, Kurek grew stronger and more independent. “Mona’s belief in me attributed to my success.”
After six weeks of occupational therapy, Kurek was independent enough to again care for herself and her home on her own. “Being able to sleep in my own home, in my own bed, and having Mona come to me for therapy was a relief. Now I’m back to my pre-COVID self.”
