About

Assem Mamayeva, MD, is an internal medicine doctor.

Born and raised in a small rural town in in East Kazakhstan, what was then a corner of the Soviet Union, Dr. Mamayeva grew up while witnessing the collapse of the Soviet structure and its effects. One of the hardest hit areas of life was the healthcare system. She was strongly inspired by her mother, a nurse in the local community hospital who took care of many people in need afflicted by infectious disease and struggling to keep chronic diseases such as diabetes and alcoholism under control. She began volunteering at the hospital, where she developed a lifelong interest in the nature of disease processes and human suffering. Recognizing early on that supporting and educating patients can be just as beneficial as some treatments in improving health and lives overall, this solidified her decision to become a doctor.

During her residency, Dr. Mamayeva gained valuable experience at Lincoln Medical Center in New York City, consistently ranked among the busiest ERs in the nation. She was drawn to the internal medicine specialty because it allows her to be at the front line of healthcare, helping to identify the root cause of a medical problem or reduce the rate of disease progression through preventive care.

Dr. Mamayeva takes satisfaction in being a primary care doctor because she can partner with patients to educate and guide them toward decisions that will improve their health and ultimately, make a positive difference in their lives. She loves that the field of internal medicine continues to evolve and she has the ability to learn more each day and use her knowledge to help solve medical mysteries. By working to understand all facets of a patient’s health and their day-to-day experiences, she can help figure out what may be contributing to an illness or impacting their wellbeing.

Dr. Mamayeva is an avid runner and a member of the New York Road Runners Organization. When she’s not working or running, she enjoys taking in the outdoors while hiking, camping or skiing. She also loves to sing and is learning to play piano.
