The Next Wave at Kent Campus
The Next Wave will transform key areas of our Kent Campus, creating more space for care, improving how patients move through the hospital and supporting the needs of our growing community.
Expanding Inpatient Care
Our Emergency Department will be renovated and expanded. This will reduce the number of patients awaiting admission and shorten hospital stays for patients by making care more efficient. In periods where demand for emergency care surges, we will be equipped to care for everyone who walks through our doors.
Supporting Better, More Efficient Care
The Pharmacy and Laboratory on our Kent Campus will move to new spaces directly above the Emergency Department, helping improve efficiency and turnaround times. The Intensive Care Unit will also expand to provide additional space to care for critically ill patients.
Creating More Welcoming Spaces
As our Kent Campus grows, our cafeteria and kitchen will grow with it. Expanded spaces will provide patients, visitors and team members with a more comfortable and welcoming place to enjoy meals and take a break. For our inpatients, the expanded kitchen will also support nutritious meals designed to promote healing and recovery.
The Next Wave at Sussex Campus
The Next Wave will expand access to specialty and outpatient care at our Sussex Campus, making it easier for patients to get the services they need close to home.
Bringing More Specialty Care Together
A new 80,000-square-foot Medical Office Building will bring multiple specialties together in one convenient location, making it easier for patients to coordinate appointments and navigate their care.
Expanded Bayhealth Heart & Vascular Institute services will also be brought together under one roof. These enhanced spaces will support our clinicians in providing exceptional care while helping Bayhealth recruit more heart specialists to meet the needs of our growing community.
Expanding Advanced Outpatient Care
As more procedures can be safely performed in an outpatient setting, we’re investing in the spaces and technology needed to meet that growing demand.
In our new interventional suite, you’ll have access to advanced procedures designed to support shorter recovery times and make your care more convenient.
The new space will bring together interventional radiology, interventional neurology, electrophysiology and cardiac catheterization, helping more patients receive high-quality, specialized care close to home.

Bringing More Care Closer to Home
Bayhealth has more than 35 outpatient locations across Kent, Sussex and New Castle counties. Through The Next Wave, we’re building on that network to make care easier to access as our communities grow.
Expanding Care in Smyrna
We’re planning to grow our presence in Smyrna to better serve northern Kent County and southern New Castle County.
Plans call for a new Bayhealth Total Care location in Smyrna that would expand emergency services and bring emergency, urgent and observation care together in one place. The campus would also include an Ambulatory Surgery Center for same-day procedures, advanced imaging, diagnostic testing and specialty care. Bringing these services together will make it easier for patients to get connected care close to home.
At our Carter Road location, plans include expanded primary and specialty care, imaging, diagnostic testing, rehabilitation and other outpatient services. This will give patients access to more Bayhealth services in one location.
Growing With the Milton Community
Patients at Bayhealth Total Care, Milton continue to share positive feedback about the care and services they receive. As the Milton area grows, we’re excited to grow with it and bring even more services to the community.
Plans call for 10 more emergency exam rooms and expanded imaging and diagnostic services. These changes will help meet the growing healthcare needs of Milton and nearby communities.

Expanding Outpatient Care in Dover
At Bayhealth at Blue Hen, known to some as the old Blue Hen Mall, we are in the process of purchasing the entire Blue Hen Corporate Center. This will create more opportunities to bring care together in one convenient area along South Bay Road.
Future plans include more diagnostic and treatment services, physician practices, eye care, women’s services and outpatient surgery. The 20,000-square-foot conference center will also support medical education, nursing training and physician onboarding.
