An Awesome Wave of Good is Coming.
For more than 100 years, Bayhealth has been caring for our neighbors – the people of central and southern Delaware – with dedication, compassion and skill. We have grown alongside our communities, always adapting to meet their needs.
We’re launching The Next Wave — a major facilities project designed to strengthen how we deliver care across our hospitals and outpatient facilities. This investment is not just about new walls. It’s about removing barriers, improving flow and supporting the healing work you do every day. It’s about making it easier for you to do your best work. It’s about giving our patients the best possible care environment. It’s about flow, access and healing — all working together.
Now, The Next Wave is breaking. The future of healthcare in our region is taking shape, and we are ready to lead it.
Our team members and clinicians will feel the positive impact:
- We’re creating environments where clinicians and professionals want to work, grow and thrive.
- With spaces designed for collaboration and innovation, we’ll create spaces where teams feel supported and inspired every day.
- We’ll continue to enhance our culture by creating environments where excellence in care can thrive.
- We’re creating a destination health system – a place where more top physicians, nurses and specialists will choose to practice.
- Investments in our facilities and technology will attract the very best talent and create a hub where leading clinicians want to serve and build their careers.
Every patient deserves the very best care — and every care team deserves the right environment to provide it. The Next Wave makes both possible. Built by Delawareans for Delawareans, our project ensures our community thrives together for the next generation.

The Next Wave at Kent Campus
More inpatient capacity, and more private rooms
Our central patient tower will grow from four stories to 10 stories through a phased build out. This addition will add 64 private, inpatient rooms, which will not only enhance the patient experience, but will further improve patient outcomes.Increasing emergency care capacity
Our Emergency Department will be renovated and expanded. This will reduce the number of patients awaiting admission and shorten hospital stays for patients by making care more efficient. In periods where demand for emergency care surges, we will be equipped to care for everyone who walks through our doors.Improving efficiency and logistics
The Pharmacy and Laboratory will relocate to new space directly above the Emergency Department, improving turnaround times and efficiency. The Intensive Care Unit will also be enlarged to meet the growing needs of critically ill patients.Enhancing the guest experience
As we welcome more patients and guests, we must relocate and expand our cafeteria and kitchen. We’re ensuring patients, visitors and team members have comfortable and welcoming spaces to prepare and share meals.
The Next Wave at Sussex Campus
Creating access and more seamless care
We will build a new 80,000-square-foot Medical Office Building that will house multiple specialties, making outpatient care easier for patients to coordinate visits and navigate care.
Expanded Bayhealth Heart & Vascular Institute services will be consolidated under one roof. Improved facilities that promote better patient experience, and support clinicians in providing superior care will also make it easier to recruit more heart specialists to Sussex County – ensuring faster, life-saving care for our growing population.

A commitment to quality in an outpatient setting
Each day, more healthcare procedures are being performed in an outpatient setting, and the need for outpatient support will continue to grow. In response, we remain committed to being on the leading edge of this wave by providing the highest quality of care for a wide array of outpatient procedures in a new interventional suite, including interventional radiology, interventional neurology, electrophysiology and cardiac catheterization procedures.
