Vice President & Chief Information Officer
Richard Mohnk, MSA, MT(ASCP) is vice president and chief information officer. He leads a team of more than 150 staff members that supports technology and telecommunication for over 4,000 employees and more than 400 medical staff members across 80-plus Bayhealth care locations.
Since joining Bayhealth in 2015, Mohnk has helped to transform information technology into a strategic asset at the organization. After he began efforts to streamline and improve operations in the Information Technology department, employees took notice: a Press Ganey survey of staff showed a significant improvement in engagement and satisfaction with IT in subsequent years following 2015.
Under Mohnk’s leadership, the IT team successfully completed the roll-out of the Epic electronic health record across the health system. To date, IT has also accomplished the technology design and build for a new hospital (Bayhealth Sussex Campus), implemented the Community Connect program that supports independent physician practices in the Epic electronic health record, and supported several additional strategic technology-focused initiatives.
Mohnk continues to drive the department forward in upholding Bayhealth’s commitment to the processes of high reliability organizations (HRO); to using the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) as a methodology for quality and operational processes in IT; and to embracing the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a cybersecurity guide.
Having held leadership positions in three states prior to joining Bayhealth, Mohnk brings deep healthcare IT expertise to his role. His experience spans UMass Memorial Health Care (Worcester, MA), HealthAlliance Hospital (Leominster, MA), St. Peter’s Hospital (Helena, MT), and Memorial Healthcare Center (Owosso, MI).
He was a speaker at the Cleveland Health IT Summit (“40+ Years in Healthcare – Transforming IT,” March 2018), and was featured in the Toggle magazine “IT on the move” edition (August 2018). Mohnk also served in 2010 and 2011 as co-chair of two of Siemens’ innovation conferences in Philadelphia and Las Vegas and as a Meaningful Use member of the Siemens Customer National Ad Hoc Committee. In addition, he was a Designated Host site leader for several technology companies (Siemens, InnerWireless, IBM, and Draeger Inc.) and a member of executive councils for Siemens Soarian systems software electronic health record development and the InnerWireless Distributed Antenna System start-up.
Mohnk is a member of Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives. He holds a BS in medical technology from Saginaw Valley State University and an MS in administration (core curricula in health services administration) from Central Michigan University.
