Awards & Recognitions
Tara Steele, RN, a patient care nurse, embraces the Bayhealth values every day.
Recently, a young woman experiencing homelessness had a lengthy stay on the 5B unit at Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus. Steele took the time to build a trusting relationship with this patient. Steele has learned the patient’s likes, dislikes, and personality.
Steele brought her clothes, books, and encouraged coworkers to learn more about the patient in order to better support her needs. Even when the patient was not in her care, Steele made it a point to stop in and see her. Steele’s persistence and compassion made all the difference in the patient’s stay, turning a less-than-ideal situation into a positive experience.
According to her coworkers, taking the time to see the best in each patient is just one example of what makes Steele an extraordinary nurse.
The DAISY Award is given by the DAISY Foundation, which was formed in 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. The Barnes family wanted to recognize the nurses who cared for Patrick and all the other “unsung heroes” of the nursing profession.
DAISY Award honorees are chosen by nurses, administrators, peers, physicians, volunteers, patients, and family. If you know a Bayhealth nurse who deserves to be nominated, visit Bayhealth.org/DAISY and fill out the nomination form.
