Kelley Earns DAISY Award for Compassionate Care
Bayhealth’s Madison Kelley, RN, at Kent Campus Birthing Center, has earned a DAISY Award for her sensitive and tender care of a pregnant patient.
The DAISY Award was created in 2001 to recognize nurses across the country who went above and beyond for their patients. DAISY is an acronym that stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Foundation was created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who ultimately died of an autoimmune disease that took his life at the age of 33.
Here at Bayhealth, the DAISY Award is used often as a means of showing gratitude for the excellent care our nurses have provided to countless patients. Every month, it is awarded to a different nurse nominated by a patient/patient’s family member that has been moved by their dedication to providing compassionate patient care.
Kelley’s patient was pregnant with twins and was experiencing pre-eclampsia. Kelley remained at the expecting mother’s side every step of the way.
Understandably, Kelley’s patient was very worried about not only her health but that of her twins. Kelley immediately took on the role of being there for her patient, both physically and emotionally. Kelley acted as her rock and made sure to never let her feel overlooked but validated.
Kelley demonstrated a calm, attentive compassion to both her patient and her patient’s husband. Kelley made sure to ease their worries, answering all their questions in an empathetic and reassuring manner. Kelley’s compassion was described as something that could not be taught in a textbook. It seemed innate to Kelley, which is what set her apart in her patient’s eyes, who stated, “It is evident that nursing is her calling.”
“She helped me walk, change, and feel like a rock star after my delivery despite the pain and discomfort. She is truly a life saver, and I will forever be thankful to her for giving me the confidence to deliver my twins,” the patient said.
DAISY Award honorees are chosen by nurses, administrators, peers, physicians, volunteers, patients, and families. Visit Bayhealth.org/DAISY and fill out a nomination form to recognize a nurse you feel deserves to be honored.
