Annual Drive Out Cancer Golf Outing Supports Bayhealth Cancer Institute
The Drive Out Cancer Golf Outing returned to Deerfield Golf Club this fall, continuing a tradition that began with the gratitude and generosity of a Bayhealth patient determined to give back.
The event was founded by grateful patient Stephanie Keys who, alongside a close-knit group of family and friends, launched the outing to support the Bayhealth Cancer Institute. Keys formed meaningful relationships with her care team throughout her cancer journey, especially with Sandi Voss, a longtime team member in the Cancer Center. Voss volunteered for the tournament and played a key role in planning this year’s event.
“Stephanie’s connection to her caregivers inspired her to take action in a remarkable way,” said Bayhealth Foundation Director of Development Chuck Desch. “This event was a testament to the strength of those relationships and her desire to give back to the place that cared for her.”
Over the past three years Keys remained deeply involved by volunteering and attending the outing annually. The event stood out because although Keys lived in New Castle County she chose to receive her cancer care at Bayhealth, and her community followed her lead. A dedicated group of volunteers, family and friends rallied around the cause and fueled its growth.
“The passion this group brought was what made the event so unique,” said Desch. “They cared deeply about ensuring people in Delaware had access to exceptional cancer care.”
Community partners, especially the team from Twisted Irons Craft Brewing in Newark, embraced the outing and contributed significantly to its momentum.
One of the most meaningful moments from past outings came when Bayhealth Foundation presented Keys with a replica plaque recognizing the gifts made through the event. Proceeds from the Drive Out Cancer Golf Outing were used to name a chemo pod at Bayhealth Hospital Kent Campus – an enduring tribute to Keys’ generosity and impact.
Bayhealth sponsors a team in the event annually and the Foundation team takes pride in the ongoing partnership with Keys and the community who champions her cause.
“We are enormously grateful to Stephanie and everyone who dedicates their time and energy to making this outing successful each year,” said John Shevock, FACHE, FACMPE, the executive director of Bayhealth Cancer Institute and senior director of operations for the oncology service line. “When the community stands behind cancer care, great things happen.”
Participants experienced a well-organized and engaging tournament. Community members who wish to get involved in future events, whether by golfing, volunteering or sponsoring, are encouraged to connect with the organizers or the Bayhealth Foundation.
Events like the Drive Out Cancer Golf Outing play a vital role in advancing cancer care in Delaware. Support from the community helps ensure patients have access to high-quality care close to home.
“The partnership between Stephanie, the Bayhealth Foundation and the Bayhealth Cancer Institute highlights the power of gratitude and community,” Shevock said. “We are thankful for everyone who makes this event possible year after year.”
