Coombs Recognized with Sunshine Award

Certified Nursing Assistant Monica Coombs embodies the Bayhealth core value of compassion. She goes the extra mile when caring for patients on the Bayhealth Sussex Campus 5A unit, which earned her a Sunshine Award.

The Sunshine Award recognizes Bayhealth's extraordinary nursing assistants and techs. This nationwide program originated at Guthrie County Hospital as an extension of the DAISY Award—as daisies need sunshine to grow.

Coombs makes it a priority to ensure all her patients’ needs are met and cares for each of them as she would her own family members.

“When she is on duty, her patients’ call bells rarely ring because she constantly checks on her patients throughout her shift,” said the coworker who nominated her for the award.

One example of Coombs’s compassion involved a patient who was on her unit for an extended period of time while awaiting placement in a long-term facility. The patient had many needs and was often lonely. Coombs spent extra time with the patient, making the patient feel comforted and cared for.

Additionally, Coombs volunteers her personal time at the hospital and in the community. Recently, she helped raise over $800 for a Salvation Army fundraiser.

“Her work ethic is unmatched, and she is always available to help where she is needed,” her coworker said.
