Supporting The Future Of Healthcare
Residents of Smyrna enjoy the small-town life and take pride in celebrating the community, traditions, and history of their town. Local business owners Ron and Ellen Sayers are perfect examples of Smyrna pride. The beloved town has been home to Ron’s family for more than 70 years. The Sayerses believe in giving back to their community through charitable donations and events, and are strong supporters of Bayhealth.
As Ron sees it, a community needs a strong healthcare system to thrive. “Bayhealth does an excellent job,” said Ron. “Over the years, I have been in and out of the hospital for various reasons and always received wonderful care,” he said. “Healthcare is so important because it impacts the quality of life of the people in the community. Everyone should support Bayhealth so they can continue to provide the best possible care when it’s needed most.”
Bayhealth Foundation President Lindsay Rhodenbaugh said the generous contributions from the Sayerses over the years have supported programs across Bayhealth. “Ron and Ellen have been involved with Bayhealth for many years in a number of different capacities,” he said. “They demonstrate a genuine spirit of generosity and a desire to help make this area stronger.”
The Sayerses own a jewelry store that has been a landmark on Main Street in Smyrna for more than 66 years. Ellen said being a local business owner has allowed the family to embrace the community on a daily basis. “We are a part of all the happy occasions like birthdays, holidays, weddings, and celebrations. We have met so many wonderful people over the years and built lasting relationships,” she said. “It’s important for us to donate to the hospital because the health of the people and the community we love is very important to us.”
As supporters of Bayhealth, the Sayerses have seen firsthand how the organization has grown over the years. The Bayhealth Emergency Center, Smyrna has been a blessing to the Smyrna-Clayton community; the center is a fully staffed, eight-bed emergency room open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “It’s a lifesaver not just to us but to everyone in the community,” Ron said. “We are thrilled to have it so close by; it gives us peace of mind. The new hospital opening in southern Delaware will do the same for the people living in that community.”
The Bayhealth Sussex Campus slated to open in 2019 will include an outpatient center and a six-story hospital with an expanded emergency department, additional operating rooms, and all private patient rooms. The 70,000-square-foot outpatient center will allow for additional services in one easy-to-access facility.
“We are very fortunate to have one of the best healthcare systems around,” Ron said. “The future of healthcare looks very bright for the people of Delaware.”
