Your Guide to a Healthier, Happier Summer in Delaware

Summer in Delaware isn’t just about beach days, boardwalk fries and bay sunsets – it’s also the perfect time to build healthier habits. With longer days, warmer weather and plenty of fresh local produce, summer naturally encourages movement, hydration and wellness. Whether you’re hoping to de-stress, improve your heart health, build strength or shed a few pounds, now’s the time to start. Bayhealth Family Medicine Physician Laurianne Haynes, MD, shares simple ways to enjoy the season and boost your well-being.

Get Moving Outdoors

“Exercise doesn’t have to happen inside a gym,” said Dr. Haynes. “Summer offers countless ways to stay active while soaking up the sunshine. We’re lucky – there’s so much to do in Delaware!” Take a morning walk on a scenic trail, bike through your neighborhood or swim at a local beach or pool. Outdoor activity helps burn calories, improve mood and increase vitamin D. “Just don’t forget the sunscreen,” she added.

Embrace Seasonal Eating

Summer brings a bounty of fresh Delaware-grown produce. Visit local favorites like the Historic Lewes, Milford Riverwalk or Harrington farmers markets to load up on ripe tomatoes, peaches, cucumbers, berries and leafy greens. These nutrient-rich, hydrating foods help keep you cool and energized all season long.

Stay Hydrated

Hot, humid days can dehydrate you quickly. Drinking enough water supports energy, digestion and metabolism. Carry a reusable water bottle and sip throughout the day – even before you feel thirsty. For a flavorful twist, Dr. Haynes recommends citrus berry Detox Water: mix orange, lemon and lime slices with strawberries, blueberries, ginger, mint and ice. Let it chill in the fridge for 45 minutes and enjoy. You can refill the pitcher until the flavor fades.

Try Something New

Summer is the perfect time to break out of your routine. Delaware is full of fun, active options – rent a kayak or paddleboard at Trap Pond or Rehoboth Bay or explore hiking trails at Bombay Hook or Cape Henlopen. Prefer social fitness? Try sunrise or sunset beach yoga in Dewey or Bethany. Even hobbies like gardening, biking or joining a local walking club can energize your mind and body while helping you connect with others. “Trying something new keeps your brain engaged and your body moving,” said Dr. Haynes.

Make Mental Wellness a Priority

Spending time outdoors and unplugging from screens is a proven stress reliever. Relax at the beach, read under a shady tree or meditate in your backyard. “Even short moments of mindfulness can lower stress and boost your mood,” said Dr. Haynes. Just 10 minutes in nature can ease anxiety and improve focus. Delaware has plenty of peaceful places to recharge, like Killens Pond or Gordon’s Pond Trail.

Sleep Smarter

While summer encourages more activity, don’t forget the importance of rest. Longer days and shifting routines can throw off your sleep, which is essential for recovery and overall wellness. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule, avoid screens before bed and create a cool, dark environment for optimal rest. A calming bedtime routine – like journaling or a warm shower – can help train your body to wind down naturally.
