Advanced Robotic Lung Biopsy with Ion by Intuitive®

Early Detection. Greater Precision. Better Outcomes.

The Ion by Intuitive® robotic bronchoscopy platform is a powerful tool in the fight against lung cancer. This state-of-the-art technology is available at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus – bringing safer, more accurate lung biopsies to our community.

Why It Matters

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. One reason is that it’s often detected at a later stage when treatment options may be limited. The key to saving lives is early detection and diagnosis.

That’s where the Ion platform makes a difference.

How It Works

The Ion uses a thin, flexible robotic catheter that allows our specialists to reach small, hard-to-access nodules deep in the lungs. This technology gives our specialists greater precision and control during biopsy procedures – enabling safer, more accurate diagnoses than ever before.

“With the Ion, we can reach these areas safely and accurately, which helps us detect cancer sooner and begin treatment earlier.” — Margarita Gianniosis, MD, Pulmonology and Critical Care

Patient Benefits

  • Minimally invasive approach
  • Faster recovery and less discomfort
  • Fewer complications compared to traditional lung biopsy methods
  • Greater peace of mind with accurate results

Who Should Get Screened?

Lung cancer screening is recommended for adults ages 50 to 80 with a history of smoking or exposure to cancer-causing substances. A  is the first step in screening. If an abnormal nodule is detected, your doctor may recommend a biopsy using the Ion platform.

“Early detection saves lives. If you meet the screening criteria, don’t wait to talk with your provider.” — Syed Nazeer Mahmood, MD, Pulmonology and Critical Care
