Bayhealth Launches Walk with a Doc Program in Dover

Thursday, August 10, 2023 | Community Outreach

Bayhealth is encouraging community members to put their best foot forward and take a step toward better health with Walk with a Doc, a health program that brings doctors and patients together to walk every first Sunday of the month at 11 a.m. at Brecknock County Park.

Walk with a Doc is an international non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire communities through movement and conversation. Bayhealth’s first Walk with a Doc event was on Sunday, Aug. 6. This inaugural event marked the start of the Dover chapter for Walk with a Doc led by Bayhealth PGY-2 General Surgery Resident Lindsay Grasso, MD, and Bayhealth Undergraduate Medical Education Program Chair and family medicine physician Shalini Shah, MD, MPH.

“This program has had tremendous participation and success in hundreds of cities around the world,” said Dr. Grasso. “I’m very pleased to bring this exciting and community-focused program to Dover as it has shown such improved health results for countless people. To have more than 40 participants for our first event is so encouraging, and I am excited to continue to grow this program for our community alongside Dr. Shah.”

Each walk is open and free to all members of the community. Walkers will enjoy a refreshing and rejuvenating walk with various Bayhealth physicians and other healthcare professionals who will provide support to participants and answer questions during the walk.

Prior to the walks, a Bayhealth physician gives a brief talk on various health topics. The first event was kicked off by Bayhealth Undergraduate Medical Education Faculty and family medicine physician Joseph Rubacky, DO, FAAFP, who spoke about the importance of physical activity, especially as we age.

“There’s no question that increasing exercise, even moderately, reduces the risks of many diseases, including coronary heart disease, breast and colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes,” said Dr. Rubacky. “Research has even shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour that you exercise regularly.”

At Bayhealth, caring for our community members goes beyond the walls of our hospitals and practices. The Bayhealth Walk with a Doc program aims to encourage community members to safely walk, learn about current health topics and meet other members of the community. The program encourages our community to take an active role in their health journey and put their best foot forward with Bayhealth.

“Walk with a Doc is honored to team up with Bayhealth. By incorporating this program into the practice, Bayhealth is demonstrating an exceptional level of care and commitment to their community,” said Dr. David Sabgir, founder of Walk with a Doc.
