Bayhealth's Dr. Kandis Samuels Named Young Physician of the Year

As a doctor dedicated to educating, Bayhealth Family Medicine Physician Kandis Samuels-Leutzinger, MD, MPH, continues to have a forward focus in healthcare. Outside of treating patients, she spends hours in preparation for speaking engagements across the region. Her mission is to equip those in the community with knowledge, helping them to make their own best healthcare decisions.
The National Medical Association’s (NMA) First State Chapter is proudly awarding Dr. Samuels with the Young Physician of the Year award. This award is reserved for physician leaders, five years or less into their practice, who consistently achieve high standards in the practice of medicine and are looked upon as a role model by their peers.
Currently serving as the Young Physician Coordinator for the NMA, Dr. Samuels was shocked when she was announced as the winner of this distinct honor. She shared, “I was surprised when they called my name—I wasn’t aware that I had been nominated and there are so many physicians doing wonderful work in our region.” Region 2 of the NMA includes Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, D.C., and Virginia.
Bayhealth Family Medicine Residency Program Director Brintha Vasagar, MD, MPH, FAAFP, works closely with Dr. Samuels at Bayhealth. Dr. Vasagar said, “Dr. Samuels has made us immeasurably proud: giving countless community talks, providing excellent patient care, and developing programming for our residency.” There is no doubt that Dr. Samuels is exceptionally invested in both her work and community.
Dr. Samuels has traveled to events such as the vaccination education seminar at Calvary Baptist Church in Wilmington, Delaware in February 2022. She educated the women’s ministry on topics such as COVID vaccine hesitancy and provided information about receiving the booster.
In March 2022, she spoke to the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League, Chapter of the NAACP. Dr. Samuels taught about prevention of chronic kidney disease in the African American community, covering topics such as living a heart healthy lifestyle in diet and exercise, establishing care with a primary doctor, and the benefits of knowing family history.
Other COVID vaccine informational events included the City of Dover council meeting and the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Children and Families COVID-19 Vaccine for Childcare webinar.
Dr. Samuels said, “I do believe people can make the best decision, if they know enough to make an informed decision.” Bayhealth is thrilled to honor Dr. Samuels on this well-deserved award.
