Black History Month Spotlight: Kimberly Holmes, Clinical Nurse Specialist

Kimberly Holmes, MSN, APRN, ACNS-BC, PCCN-K, is a Clinical Nurse Specialist and Primary Stroke Program Coordinator at Bayhealth Kent & Sussex campuses. She knew at a young age that she wanted to be a nurse. She has dedicated her career to ensuring that all her patients receive the care that they need.
As we celebrate Black History Month, Bayhealth is highlighting some of our team members in a series called “Rising Above.” Read their inspiring stories of service and affecting change in our community and workplace on Bayhealth’s social media pages.
As the Primary Stroke Coordinator, Holmes knows that stroke disproportionately affects people of color. In her role at Bayhealth, she ensures all patients with a diagnosis of stroke receive standardized care, regardless of race or ethnicity. She also participates in community events with an educational focus by speaking on key risk factors that affect people of color and how they can be avoided or managed.
Holmes formerly served as the president of the Delaware American Heart Association Board and she currently chairs the Delaware Stroke System of Care Committee. She has led initiatives for blood pressure control and standardized messaging for statewide communication regarding stroke recognition, treatment and prevention. She has also worked to ensure collaborative transport of care between acute care hospitals in Delaware.
Besides being an invaluable team member at Bayhealth, Holmes is an active member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church, in Smyrna, DE. She is currently the secretary of the missionary society. As a missionary, she assists in numerous events throughout the year to benefit our community and beyond.
The message that Kimberly Holmes wants to send to her peers is, “Never judge someone without first knowing their story.”
