Invenia™ Automated Breast Ultrasound

Helping Find Breast Cancer Earlier

Mammograms are the gold standard for breast cancer screening; however, they cannot detect all cancers. Studies show that women with dense breast tissue may benefit from additional imaging, such as ultrasound, to help find some breast cancers that cannot be seen on mammograms. Bayhealth offers the Invenia™ Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) — an advanced, FDA-approved technology that’s specially designed to find cancers that can be hidden in dense breast tissue. What Is Dense Breast Tissue?

Everyone’s breasts are different. Some have more fat, others have more breast tissue. When there’s more breast tissue than fat, the breasts are considered dense.

Why it matters:

  • Dense tissue makes it harder to see cancer on a mammogram because both dense tissue and lumps appear white.
  • Women with dense breasts have a higher risk of breast cancer — up to 4 to 6 times higher.
  • The FDA now mandates that women be notified after a mammogram if their breasts are dense and should be given options for screening if available.

How Advanced Imaging Can Help

The automated breast ultrasound is a special 3D ultrasound that gives a clearer look at dense breasts and helps find cancers that mammograms might miss. When used along with a mammogram, studies show that ABUS can find 35.7% more cancers that may not show up on a mammogram alone.

Mammograms work well for many women, but not all. Automated breast ultrasound provides an extra layer of screening that could make all the difference in detecting cancer earlier, when it’s most treatable. Additional benefits of ABUS include:

  • No radiation.
  • Non-invasive and comfortable.
  • Takes only a few minutes.
  • Covered by most health insurance plans.

Take Charge of Your Breast Health

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Keep getting regular mammograms as recommended by your doctor.
  2. Ask if you have dense breast tissue — your mammogram report will indicate.
  3. Talk to your doctor about whether ABUS could be a good next step for you.

Women should get regular mammograms as suggested by their doctor. If they have been informed that they have dense breast tissue, they should talk to their doctor about their specific risk and additional screening tests that might be appropriate, like the ABUS test.
