Hip Pain

Hip pain can turn even the most routine tasks into a challenge—from getting out of bed in the morning to walking your dog around the block at night. While conditions that contribute to hip pain can develop for many reasons, common causes include injury, tendonitis, arthritis and the wear-and-tear of aging. Without proper treatment, your condition could get worse over time, leading to complications such as disability. Speak with a Bayhealth orthopedic expert.

Conditions We Treat

Our orthopedic specialists are leading experts who use time-tested treatment approaches in combination with innovative new methods to provide the best possible results. Physicians and staff work collaboratively in the treatment of routine injuries as well as traumatic conditions, including breaks and ligament tears. Common conditions include the following.

International-Geriatric
  • Hip Fractures: Hip fractures are the second-leading cause of hospitalizations in individuals 65 and older. Most of those fractures occur from a fall in or around the household. If not promptly treated, geriatric hip fractures can lead to life-threatening complications. Bayhealth orthopedic experts prioritize safety and efficiency when treating your injury. Designated a “Premiere” center from the International Geriatric Fracture Society (IGFS), our team is committed to meeting and exceeding national benchmarks in hip fracture care.
  • Arthritic Hip: A common orthopedic condition among seniors, hip arthritis refers to the deterioration of cartilage between the top of your thighbone (femoral head) and hip socket (acetabulum). As the cartilage becomes damaged, your bones rub together, causing pain, stiffness and bone spurs. Our experts evaluate your arthritis and recommend the best treatment plan to have you on the road to recovery.

Using an array of diagnostic procedures, our experts evaluate your symptoms, identify the issue and outline the best possible course of action.

Experts in Orthopedic Surgery

Our highly trained orthopedic experts take several factors into consideration when outlining your treatment plan, including your age, medical history and the extent of your injury. While we use conservative methods whenever possible, our skilled orthopedic surgeons perform a range of procedures to address severe hip pain and related conditions.

Those procedures include the following.

  • Total Hip Replacement: More than 450,000 hip replacements are performed in the U.S. each year. Also known as a total hip arthroplasty, this common procedure involves replacing damaged bone and cartilage with prosthetic components.
  • Hip Resurfacing: Unlike a total hip replacement, which replaces both the ball and socket of your hip joint, resurfacing only replaces the socket. Ideal candidates include physically active individuals younger than 60 who have strong, healthy bones.
  • Anterior Hip Replacement: An innovation in orthopedic surgery, the anterior approach to hip replacement uses a cutting-edge operating table (the Hana table) to access your hip without detaching the muscle. While not all orthopedic surgeons are qualified to perform this procedure, Bayhealth has surgeons who specialize in it.
  • Total Hip Revision: Should your artificial hip need to be repaired or replaced, our fellowship-trained hip revision specialist provides exceptional, individualized care.

The primary goal of our robust orthopedics team is to restore movement and function in the damaged areas of your body so that you can return to normal routines. Speak with an orthopedic expert at Bayhealth about treatment for hip pain.
