Nearly four million people in the U.S. seek medical attention for knee pain every year.
While damage to your knee or leg bones can develop for many reasons, common causes include arthritis, overuse and sports-related injuries. Without proper treatment, damage to your knee or leg could result in disability or other complications. Orthopedic specialists at Bayhealth treat the full range of injuries and conditions associated with leg pain, including complex fractures and damaged tendons. Speak with a Bayhealth orthopedic expert.
Conditions We Treat
Working in close collaboration, our specialists treat a range of orthopedic conditions—from routine sprains to traumatic injuries. Among the conditions we treat are the following.
- Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury: The ACL is a strong tissue in your knee that helps connect your shinbone to your thigh bone. Most ACL injuries occur during sports that involve repeatedly running up and down a court or field, such as soccer, basketball and football. Learn more about sports-related injuries.
- Meniscal Tears: Made up of two tough strips of cartilage in your knee, your meniscus acts like a shock absorber between your shinbone and thighbone. Meniscal tears commonly occur during sports that involve sudden twisting motions, such as turning to catch or kick a ball. Learn more about sports-related injuries.
Using an array of diagnostic procedures, our experts evaluate your symptoms, identify the issue and outline the best possible course of action.

Experts in Orthopedic Surgery
Our experts take several factors into consideration when outlining your individualized treatment plan, including your age, medical history and the extent of your injury. While we use conservative treatment methods whenever possible, our orthopedic surgeons perform a range of minimally invasive procedures to address severe leg conditions.
Those procedures include the following.
- Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Repair: A strong tissue located in your knee, your ACL helps connect your shinbone to your thigh bone. Most injuries to the ACL occur during sports that involve repeatedly running up and down a court, such as soccer, basketball and football. Depending on the extent of your ACL injury, our surgeons will either replace the damaged tendon with one from somewhere else on your body (autograft) or from a cadaver (allograft).
- Cartilage Repair/Regeneration: Many knee injuries wear away the cartilage thatcovers the ends of your bones, eventually resulting in pain, swelling and stiffness. Among the methods we use to treat damaged cartilage is microfracturing, which involves creating small fractures in the bone that allow new tissue to replace the damaged cartilage. Depending on your injury or condition, our experts may also perform a regeneration procedure that uses cells to grow a new cartilage surface.
- Knee Joint Repair (Arthroscopy): A cutting-edge approach to joint surgery, arthroscopy involves the use of small incisions and narrow tools to repair your injury. Guided by a thin tube (arthroscope) that transmits images, this minimally invasive procedure requires less recovery time compared to traditional methods.
- Partial Knee Replacement: For knees that have sustained partial damage—where only one area suffers from injury or arthritis—we provide partial knee replacement surgery. During this procedure, our experts remove the damaged cartilage and bone tissue from your knee and replace them with prosthetic components.
- Total Knee Replacement: For severely damaged knees, our experts may recommend a total knee replacement. This procedure involves removing the entire knee joint and replacing it with components made of metal and plastic.
-
Total Knee Revisions: Should your artificial knee need to be repaired or replaced, our fellowship-trained revision specialist provides exceptional, individualized care.
The primary goal of our robust orthopedics team is to restore movement and function to the damaged areas of your body so that you can return to normal routines. Speak with an orthopedic expert at Bayhealth about treatment for leg or knee pain.
